Hunter’s Hill shone brightly in the moonlight. It was the perfect sledging course – a smooth steep slope from the woods at the top, until it flattened out and became the back gardens of houses. The snow had already been turned into lethal ice by sledgers during the day. Now it was like a white sheet of glass.
Someone had pushed an oil-drum to the top of the slope, and they were using it as a brazier. Boys were filling it with wood so that the flames leaped high and a fiery trail of burning embers and sparks spiralled up into the night sky. Anything barbecued on that was going to end up as charcoal.
Everyone was there from their estate, plus a few others. Sledges were zooming down the slope, or toppling over and crashing. One group was pushing a front door down the slope and leaping on when it got up speed.
Nell pushed through the crowd, desperately trying to find Gwen. Evan and Falcon were searching, too. She could see Loki, and Gwen wasn’t with him. He’d found himself a flat piece of wood and was using it as a snowboard, and impressing everyone as he sped down the slope, curving round others and then screeching to a halt at the bottom in a shower of snow and ice.
She saw Laki watching, and hurried over.
‘Can’t you stop your brother?’ she pleaded. ‘I can’t leave Gwen in his power.’
For the first time Laki wasn’t laughing. She shook her head. ‘No one stops Loki doing anything, don’t you know that yet?’
Nell backed away. ‘Why are you doing this? Why are you trying to stop us saving the Elven world?’
Laki just stared.
‘Be like that, then.’
As Nell carried on her desperate search, her phone rang. She dragged it out of her pocket. It was her dad. She’d been expecting this. She took a deep breath and answered it.
‘You go into that world and you’ll die!’ he shouted immediately.
‘It’s not like that!’ She crossed her fingers, as she pushed her way through the sledgers. ‘We only have to go to the nearest harp. We’ll be back in minutes. It’s not dangerous.’
He wasn’t shouting now, he was roaring. ‘Stop telling lies! I spoke to Aurora. She did her I’m a marble statue, I can’t speak routine, until I found a sledgehammer and threatened to turn her into marble chippings if she didn’t answer me.’
‘I have to do this, Dad,’ she pleaded. ‘There’s only me who can go. Me and Evan.’
‘Why only you?’ said Tom, sarcastically. ‘Is that what he told you?’
Nell took a breath and began quoting.
